Sealants

Sealants are a plastic restorative material that is bonded to the enamel of the tooth to protect deep grooves in the tooth’s surface. A sealant is used to smooth over those deep grooves and prevent plaque and bacteria accumulation that results in decay.

Sealants are recommended on children and adults as a protective measure against tooth decay after permanent teeth have erupted into the mouth. Every patient’s risk for decay is different, and your dentist will recommend sealants based on evaluation of your individual risk.

The longevity of a sealant is typically around three years, but it can be common for sealants to last much longer. If a sealant comes off, ensure your dentist is aware as that tooth may benefit from being re-sealed.
