Dentures & Partials

Dentures

Dentures are a replacement method for an entire arch of missing teeth, and are typically considered a last-line option of tooth replacement. Dentures can be quite limited in their functionality as they rest entirely on gum tissue, however the use of dental implants as anchoring devices can greatly improve the stability and function.

The fabrication process typically takes place over the course of five appointments, and patients are able to have significant input regarding the cosmetic appearance of their denture. Denture care requires they be removed and cleaned at night to prevent infection of the oral tissues, and because dentures are made of an acrylic material they wear over time. A life-span for a denture is typically around 10 years.

Partials

Partials are a replacement option for missing teeth in an arch. They are much like dentures in their acrylic composition, however contain a metal framework incorporated into the pink acrylic. This metal framework allows for retentive clasps that latch onto existing natural teeth in the patient’s mouth.

Partials tend to have greater functionality than tissue-borne dentures. They require the patient has multiple “good” teeth for retention clasps, and like dentures have a shorter life-span than porcelain tooth replacement options.
